Why is vocabulary development important?
When a child understands the vocabulary within their text, then their comprehension improves.
In order to communicate effectively, people need to be able to understand and interpret the written or spoken text.
Increased vocabulary improves and develops a child's academic and social confidence.
When should vocabulary be taught?
Vocabulary is a skill that should always be taught. A child's vocabulary increases depending upon the exposure that the child has to unfamiliar words. Throughout elementary school, children should constantly be exposed to new vocabulary words. Teachers can help students understand vocabulary by presenting sets of words that have similar root words, or they can discuss similarities and differences in words.
